May Newsletter

Mary Surivong • May 11, 2023

April showers really do bring May flowers, this time as a super-bloom, but May is bringing a lot more than just flowers. Our students will be learning about a new artist of the month, releasing their butterflies that they've been patiently waiting and caring for, and celebrating our wonderful Mothers.

Keeping our School Safe, Beautiful, & Clean

We are kindly asking parents to let their children know that they can do their part in keeping our school beautiful and clean. This can be done by reminding them that children shouldn't be throwing rocks into the fountain for safety reasons. Another concept to teach them is to respect the plants and flowers by not picking them out. We appreciate the effort in keeping not only Gaowa beautiful and clean, but our earth as well.

Artist of the Month: Henri Matisse

Our artist of the month is Henri Matisse. Matisse is a French artist who is most known for his use of color in his artwork. His work is abstract, colorful, and very unique. The children will learn about specific art pieces like The Snail and Woman with the Hat.

The Snail

The work was created from summer 1952 to early 1953. It is pigmented with gouache on paper, cut and pasted onto a base layer of white paper measuring 9'43⁄4" × 9' 5". The piece is in the Tate Modern collection in London.

Woman with a Hat

Woman with a Hat is characteristic of Matisse’s Fauvist style. It depicts a half-length portrait of his wife, Amelie, in vivid, unnatural colors and rough, fluid brushstrokes. This piece is now housed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).
